7 Billion.

There are days when I think, Manila is growing on me.
In all its squalor, streets that smell of urine and burnt cooking oil, dark fumes expelled by vehicles, colorful garbage of plastic, cigarette stubs, paper cups, tetra packs, barbeque sticks strewn around or infiltrating a black pool of flood, and natural music made of half naked barkers, vendors with little makeshift tables, roaring engines driven by foul mouthed motorists, it embodies resilience and little hope.

On days that nothing makes sense, all I hear is a noise barrage of different means of survival and I breathe on smog.

What if Nature is its own deity?
It existed before us and it will exist again. Man had been constantly trying to defy its laws, ravaging its resources like a starved hyena devouring on human flesh, carving out mountains, banishing every life on it in expense for a tiny rock of gold. We’ve gone under water where no light has shed to dig the oil we exhausted from the surface, exploited what wasn’t ours to begin with.

Things must’ve look trivial from space.
A giant water ball harboring intelligent creatures, and one in particular standing out. He learned how to fly, swim, and run at great speed, went over the moon, divided lands, created atomic energy, invented the internet, and was obsessed with accomplishing greater possibilities to the point of depleting earth’s capacity to sustain life. Sometimes when he’s not busy fulfilling a need he made-up, he occupies himself with emotions, complicate things, forget that he’s just a temporary habitant, and nothing is his own.

Scientists said the sixth mass extinction can happen in as early as 300 years, and for the first time it's anthropogenic.

When all of us are wiped out, nature will heal itself.

Get out of my head

1. Unless you throw up, partying can make you bloated and fat.

2. Tattoo hurts after, not during.

3. Pushing yourself to the extreme all the time can get boring too. To enjoy the ride you sometimes need to step on the clutch, remove foot on gas pedal, and shift to lower gear.

4. A job that you like on weekdays and friends that you love on weekends make life easier.

5. Planting trees is equivalent to 'loose change'. It's the building blocks of restoration but the 'stock market' on conservation lies on global policies and protocol decided primarily by developed countries.

6. How do you quantify air?

7. Good guys are hard to find. And I found one.

8. ....but being good is not enough. Nothing is ever enough.

9. I'm not a big fan of Christmas. Too much preparation, hoopla, commercialism, traffic. Then one day it's over. Don't get me wrong, I'm Catholic, but I don't like the idea of reserving things and making plans just because it's Christmas. I mean, if you want to see all your friends, retreat to a beautiful island, buy something special for a loved one, treat yourself, forgive mistakes, share your blessings, WHY NOT NOW? Why wait for an occasion? Why do you let the season decide on your actions and emotions? Why not just give a sincere prayer and greet Jesus a Happy Birthday?

In some random Makati Street, in front of an underground-indie type art house turned bar, I was drinking a bottle of beer while sitting on the sidewalk with my friend. The place smells funny, and I would randomly slap my leg for mosquitoes. It’s almost 2am and we’re still waiting for a local jazz rock band to play. We’re talking about random things, I don’t even remember all of it, he was being possessive about punk rock (haha!) and muttering some hate for posers who go to weird places just to be different. I was ranting about over-sharing in facebook and how users post statuses assuming their whole network cares. We agreed it’s feeding vanity and being egotistic, shoving to people’s faces that you have a life when during the very second that you’re supposed to be living whatever it is your doing, half of you is stranded in a virtual reality.

I read a quote before but I don’t remember it exactly, it says, for our activities to be significant, we need an audience. Why stage all the dramz when no one’s watching right?

Another thing, why do some people want the whole world to know what they’re doing? Aside from being dangerous (if you’re pretty enough to attract stalkers), doesn’t it feel a bit naked? Well I do.

The “like” button also rubs me the wrong way, when you make a post, why does facebook automatically consider that you need approval? Every move is subjected for comments and public opinion, like putting yourself out there to get feedback, positive or indifferent.

So why am I still facebook when I’m obviously not a big fan? Because my friends are on it! I deleted my account before and lived normally until I realized I was always late in kwento. I heard too many “Hindi ka kasi nagfafacebook!”, like signing up on a social networking site is crucial for any friendship to survive.

Anyway, Facebook really has become a digital version of how we socialize with people. It’s not all positive though, because the way I see it, what it captured most is the social stigma of acceptance and conformity. Like a popularity contest. How many people bothered to lift their finger so they can affirm their approval on your post? Who cared about your lunch? How many pseudo friends do you have?

This is not a hate post. I’m pretty old school when it comes to some things. I believe there are things better kept to our selves.

Plus, aren’t girls more attractive when they’re mysterious? Why strip all the magic by baring your whole life out there?  Ayun lang.

Er, isn't this a useless over sharing too? Whatevs.

exhibitionist.

It takes a lot of guts to write a blog, noh?
It’s like cracking your skull and asking everyone to scrutinize its contents, stripping your thoughts stark naked and raw and unsolicited for the whole intarwebs.

It’s also very narcissistic. You can’t have a blog and not talk abut yourself, your interests, what you’ve been doing, or anything that you feel important to share. You have the stage all to yourself anyway, and no one can make you shut up, unless they stopped reading.

It’s a dead giveaway on the personality too. What people write about, and how they write it, reveals more than what is usually required. If I’m (singular personal pronoun alert! See, you can’t blog without being slightly egomaniac) going to evaluate my character based on what I’ve written here on an outsider's point of view, well… that would be difficult since a person’s sense of judgment is molded by personal experiences, culture, desires and lots of other factors only a psycho-sociologist can pin down so I can’t pretend to be someone else and give significant observation because that’s like creating a whole new world to come from. Did I just change my mind in one sentence? Oh, then there’s no need to imagine an alternate persona, I can pretty much tell that I’m unstable on my own.

Last that I can think of, having your thoughts suspended in cyberspace is like creating your own time capsule. Fragments of your being, shreds of experiences, and feelings trapped in words, are frozen in time, located somewhere in an endless stream of networks, or whatever it is that make up the illusion of an online information bank.

grow old with you

I’m a boring person. I’m starting to think I am.
Awhile ago, david and I are eating dairy queen in gateway. We’re silent for a few minutes, separately savoring softserves before the realization of routine sinks in.

You see, we’ve been doing this for four weeks straight already. Every Friday after dinner we get the same dessert. But this entry is not about couples being stuck in a rut, it’s about me as an unexciting gf.

I acted cheery and told him some stories about work. He listened patiently while I babbled about rainforestation and planting native tree species.

On our way home, he asked about my opinion on the recent hostage drama, my answer irked him. We’ve always had opposing views. I sometimes accuse him of being a devil’s advocate.

My current read is Ben Yagoda’s The Sound on The Page, it’s very insightful and informative I have to share bits of it to someone. Ofcourse, I turned to david and told him Erickson’s observation that a lot of writers have speech impediment like Winston Churchill, Jorge Luis Borges, Lewis Caroll, which made Erickson believed that “a stutter becomes a writer”. It may sound dead boring and utterly trivial but I can relate.

At home, I continued reading my book while david sat beside me, staring at something only he can see.

I blurted something about writing fiction. He said I already did. Oh yeah, he remembered my short stint as a ghostwriter for adult fiction during my freelancing months. He was so amused about it. He thought I was writing porn. It’s only 5k words. Obviously, it’s not counted. I’m thinking more like, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, with all the meticulous and elaborate descriptions.

I bored him more by telling the connection between music and writing, how good writers produce rhythmical sentences.

From what I can tell on his facial expression, he was being polite and probably wandering why penguins can’t fly.

blackout

When lights are out indefinitely and people are wagging their fans furiously, I’d like to think of Meralco as a high tech fast paced laboratory with middle aged men in orange jumpsuits analyzing color coded wires and detecting a tiny glitch that caused a massive black out.  Affecting the daily routines of thousands and influencing the little decisions everyone has to make. A young man, his first day on the job will point a casual solution as simple as securing a random plug to the right socket. There is a minute spark and buzzing sound to signal the city coming back to life. People will sigh with relief, turn on the air conditioning, connect to the Internet and continue their lives like nothing happened. They’re grateful in that instant but not the moment after, for they will surely find other things to complain about.

sophie moment

I have a friend who always argue with me when it comes to free will. He says every man is a prisoner of society, beliefs, culture etc. I used to think otherwise, I say we're free to think and let our minds go wherever but then again, action is thought in motion. Allowing something crazily abstract and inconceivable in today's standards to materialize is different from daydreaming about it altogether.
